Chapter 1: The Fall Falling furiously at 75 miles per hour, I could sense the end was imminent. The drop was 220 feet...25 stories...equal to half the height of the famous Trans America Pyramid building in San Francisco. It felt as though the wind was tearing through my skin, like tiny shards of glass, digging into my face and neck. The choppy, forest green water was rushing toward me. I could taste the salt in the air. When my hands left the rail I tried to listen for a woman's shocking scream, but instead, the silence was deafening. The wind on my face pushed my mouth wide open and my cheeks pulled back to my ears...I remember clearly, it was as if the air was sucked right out of my lungs. Right as my fingers let go of the rail, yes, the millisecond I became air-born, I thought to myself, "What have I done, I don't want to die, God please save me!"
Little did I know that people had been doing what I just did for nearly seven decades; that's right, for seventy years people have been trying to exit this earth and into the afterlife by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge. What a depressing legacy for such an otherwise great city. Why did I do this? I certainly don't claim to know why all the other people who have jumped from that bridge to their death did so, but it goes without saying that I can relate more than most... I wonder how many others, who cannot write their story, the ones who are gone forever, felt the exact same way. I am currently searching for that all but easy answer. I write this book for those who cannot share their voice, or write their words of regret.
